Digital Economy and Startups Sub sector graduated 11 trainees from its International Certification of Digital Literacy (ICDL) programme, marking another step in the county’s drive to build a digitally skilled and innovation-ready workforce.
The graduation ceremony, saw the trainees awarded ICDL certificates after successfully completing and passing the internationally recognized digital literacy examination.
In a significant boost to the graduates’ next chapter, each trainee also received a laptop donated by ComputerAid Kenya, a move aimed at enabling them to actively participate in the digital economy, pursue entrepreneurial ventures and sharpen their technology skills.
Speaking during the ceremony, County Chief Officer for Digital Economy and Startups, Wilson Gakuya, said Nairobi County was keen on ensuring young people are not left behind as the world rapidly shifts towards technology-driven economies.
Mr. Gakuya noted that emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, are reshaping industries and creating new opportunities, making digital skills increasingly essential for young people seeking employment and entrepreneurship opportunities. He reaffirmed the County Government’s commitment to equipping residents with practical digital competencies in line with H.E Governor Sakaja’s digital transformation agenda.
Director, Digital Economy and Startups, Elizabeth Ndungu challenged the graduates to remain innovative and adaptable in a fast-changing technological environment, urging them to seize emerging opportunities with confidence and creativity.
Director Operations, Computer Aid, Martin Kimani, praised the partnership between Nairobi City County Government and ComputerAid Kenya, describing the programme as a practical intervention that is helping bridge the digital divide while opening doors for youth empowerment and economic advancement.
In an emotional testimony, one of the graduates, Lena Mukundi speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, thanked Nairobi City County Government and ComputerAid Kenya for what he described as a life-changing opportunity. She said the training and laptop support would greatly enhance their ability to pursue careers, business opportunities and further learning in the digital space.
The event also brought together County Officers and trainers from Digital Economy and Startups Sub sector who played a key role in mentoring and supporting the trainees throughout the programme.
