Nairobi, 28th March, 2026
Nairobi City County, in partnership with the Clean Air Fund through the Breathe Cities Initiative and the Environmental Compliance Institute, conducted a stakeholder workshop to drive the implementation of the Nairobi City County Air Quality Action Plan (2025–2029).
The plan builds on gains made under the 2019–2023 framework and introduces updated measures to strengthen air quality management across the city. Launched on November 28, 2025, it reflects renewed commitment to addressing environmental and public health concerns linked to air pollution.
Mr. Maurice Kavai, County Deputy Director for Climate Change and Air Quality Monitoring, said that the focus is now shifting from planning to implementation. “Efforts underway include expanded air quality monitoring, community outreach, pilot low-emission initiatives, development of the non motorised corridors and structured follow-up through dedicated working groups among many other interventions the County is undertaking”. He explained.
Other speakers at the forum called for collective action, adding that no single institution can tackle air pollution alone. Discussions centered on practical approaches to joint implementation and a review of the current state of air quality management.
Participants also explored collaboration between regulatory agencies, particularly National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and Nairobi City County, with emphasis on coordinated enforcement and policy execution. The role of the private sector in promoting cleaner technologies and sustainable practices was also examined, alongside community-led efforts to drive awareness and behavior change.
Additionally, the discussions addressed disparities in air quality across the city, with stakeholders sharing views on inclusive solutions to ensure all residents benefit from cleaner air.
The engagement aligned stakeholder efforts to ensure interventions remain coordinated, targeted, and responsive to the needs of Nairobi residents.
The workshop was attended by environmental groups, government agencies, private sector players, and community organizations for a full-day engagement focused on strengthening collaboration in tackling air pollution in the capital City.
