Nairobi County Marks World Public Transport Day in style.

Nairobi City County today joined the rest of the world in marking the inaugural World Public Transport Day, with hundreds of public transport operators benefiting from free health checks.

The event drew participation of key players in the transport sector including Nairobi City County, the Ministry of Health, State Department of Transport, NaMATA, NTSA, National Police Service, the Transport Licensing Board, and representatives from the public transport sector, coming together to reflect on progress and chart the way forward for urban mobility.

The procession moved through Upper Hill, Haile Selassie Avenue, Uhuru Highway, and Moi Avenue, with Nairobi County band entertaining participants and members of the public along the route.
Worldtransportday 1Speaking during the event at the Tom Mboya Square, the County Executive Committee Member for Mobility and Works Mr. Ibrahim Auma said the day goes beyond transport systems and speaks to the people who rely on them every day.

“Public transport is the heartbeat of Nairobi. It connects our people to opportunity, to services, and to each other. Thus, World Public Transport Day is not symbolic. It is a call to action. Cities that prioritize public transport enjoy cleaner air, reduced congestion and equitable access to opportunities. Here in Nairobi we are embracing the future”. He said.

Mr. Auma highlighted key milestones the County has achieved in its endeavor towards achieving world class transport system including the Bus Route Network facilities that improve accessibility, ensuring first mile connectivity for every citizen, as well as the Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) facilities that recognize that every journey begins and ends on foot, ensuring inclusivity, safety and environmental responsibility.
Worldtransportday 3He noted that the county is taking steps to make mobility more organized and accessible, including plans to roll out a regulated bodaboda system to improve safety.

He commended transport operators for a remarkable discipline demonstrated from 2025 through the 1st quarter of 2026.”We have witnessed a transformative culture of self-discipline from PSV operators “. He stated.

Gracing the event, Ms. Laverne Dimitrov, President of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP), Africa, commended both the county and national governments for their commitment to improving mobility, and reaffirmed UITP’s readiness to support initiatives aimed at strengthening public transport systems in Kenya.
Worldtransportday 4Different speakers from various organizations represented called on road users to observe set standards and regulations, noting that safety remains a shared responsibility.

Other activities to mark the day included public engagement and feedback, showcasing of modern transport solutions and systems as well as guidance on regulations and road safety among other activities.
