Nairobi County marks TVET@100 National celebration

NAIROBI: 24th July 2024

TVET has been a cornerstone in shaping the skills and competencies of our workforce, playing a pivotal role in driving economic growth and societal development. Over the past century, TVET institutions have equipped millions of Kenyans with practical skills, enabling them to secure decent work, embark on entrepreneurial ventures, and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

County Executive Committee Member for Talent Skills Development Care Rosemary Kariuki while speaking at the event said “The Centenary Torch, launched by His Excellency the President on 26th March 2024, symbolizes the enduring spirit and legacy of TVET in Kenya. Its journey across various regions of our country has united us in celebration, reflection, and a renewed commitment to advancing vocational education and training. As we receive the torch in Nairobi County today, we embrace this moment to reaffirm our dedication to the TVET sector and its future.”

“Nairobi City County Government recognizes the critical role of TVET in addressing the evolving needs of our labor market and society. We are committed to enhancing the infrastructure and resources of our vocational training centers, fostering industry partnerships, and ensuring that our curricula remains relevant and responsive to current and future demands.” said the County Executive.

Ms. Kariuki said The County has 11 Vocational Training Centres across the City offering various courses ranging from Engineering, Hospitality, Cosmetology and Performing arts, Through initiatives like the Jitume Program, Digital Ajira and our collaboration with international institutions, we aim to provide our trainees with access to cutting-edge technology, expert instruction, and opportunities for real-world experience. We are also focused on promoting research, innovation, and financial sustainability within our TVET institutions to ensure their long-term success.”

She said “As we look forward to the grand celebration on 31st July 2024, let us continue to work together to elevate the status and impact of vocational education and Training in Kenya, and called upon all stakeholders – government agencies, industry partners, educational institutions, and the community at large – to join hands in creating an ecosystem that supports and nurtures the talents and aspirations of our youth.”

The County Executive expressed appreciation to His Excellency the President for his unwavering support of the TVET sector, the Principal Secretary, the organizing committee, and all participants for their dedication to this cause.

The County Executive was accompanied by Deputy Director Vocational Education and Training with 11 VTC’s Principals
