Nairobi County Fast-Tracks Urban Safety: County Sectors Unite to Streamline City Development agenda

Nairobi, 5th February 2026

In a landmark move to end “silo” operations and bolster public safety, Nairobi City County’s Mobility & Works and Built Environment & Urban Planning sectors have announced a high level joint coordination pact.

The initiative, aimed at eliminating red tape and planning overlaps that often compromise infrastructure integrity, was solidified in a meeting co-chaired by County Executive Committee Members Mr. Ibrahim Auma (Mobility and Works) and Mr. Patrick Mbogo (Built Environment and Urban Planning).

The partnership marks a shift toward a check and balance system for Nairobi’s growth. While the Built Environment and Urban Planning sector authorizes land use, the Mobility and Works sector builds and protects the infrastructure.
Urbansafety 2“The strength of our city lies in how well we coordinate,” stated Mr. Auma. “Planners give direction, Engineers give structure. When these arms move separately, the city faces safety risks. Together, we ensure functionality and public protection.” He added.

A joint committee of directors has been given exactly 14 days to identify current regulatory gaps and deliver actionable recommendations.

Mr. Auma announced the formation of a Technical Committee tasked with synchronizing project reviews and ensuring every development aligns with sound engineering and legal principles.

Legal teams from both sectors are now under directive to overhaul existing frameworks, ensuring no developer can bypass safety standards through legal ambiguities.
Urbansafety1Mr. Patrick Mbogo emphasized that this alignment is about more than just paperwork, it’s about efficiency. “This is our opportunity to openly tackle existing challenges and develop practical solutions that streamline approvals and uphold the law.” He said.

Nairobi residents can expect a more coordinated County. By bridging the gap between those who design the city and those who build its roads and bridges, the County Government is moving to ensure that every new development is as safe as it is functional.

Present in the meeting were directors and legal officers from the two sectors, enforcement teams alongside various technical officers from both sides.
