Nairobi County Disaster Risk Reduction Officers Build Skills in early Action planning

Nairobi, 25th June 2026

Nairobi City County Disaster Risk Reduction Officers participated in a two-day Training of Trainers (ToT) on Forecast Based Early Action Planning under the Developing Risk Awareness through Joint Action (DARAJA) Programme aimed at outlining a structured approach to risk management by integrating locally relevant early warning systems, engaging communities in disaster preparedness activities, improving coordination between various actors, and leveraging technology to ensure timely information dissemination.

The training was organized by Kounkuey Design Initiative, in collaboration with the Kenya Meteorological Department, and brought together Disaster Risk Officers from the 17 sub counties to strengthen their technical and facilitation capacity in forecast-based early action planning.

Through highly interactive and practical sessions, the officers were equipped with skills to interpret weather and climate forecast products, link forecasts to likely impacts, and identify appropriate early actions. The training also focused on effective risk communication, development of advisories, and strengthening community preparedness through engagement with Community Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) and other local actors.

Participants engaged in simulations and group exercises designed to enhance their ability to translate scientific forecasts into actionable early warning messages that can support timely decision making at the community level.

The officers are expected to cascade the knowledge and skills gained to frontline responders and community structures, strengthening Nairobi’s resilience to climate and weather related hazards.
