Nairobi, 12th December, 2025
Nairobi County’s Social Services sub sector led by its Chief Officer Tony Kimani received donations at the Mji wa Huruma Home for the Elderly. The consignment included clothes, books, blankets, diapers, and wheelchairs, reflecting sustained goodwill from partners and well-wishers committed to improving the daily lives of the elderly.
Mr. Kimani lauded the partners for their continued solidarity, noting that three physically challenged residents who urgently required new wheelchairs, were generously provided by the Chandaria Foundation.
He emphasized that such contributions directly uplift the quality of life at the home for the 39 elderly residents aged between 70 and 90 years. “Partner support has been instrumental in ensuring that the county-run home operates with dignity and compassion at its core” he stated.
The County Chief Officer reaffirmed Nairobi County Government’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of older persons, urging Nairobi residents to keep visiting, donating, and spending meaningful time with the elderly. He noted that for many at Mji wa Huruma, the facility is the only home they know, and they deserve respect, companionship, and consistent care.“I am confident that more partners will come on board to enhance services at the home and safeguard a dignified life for all its residents.”
County Assistant Director, Family Welfare, Fredrick Ogutu, echoed these sentiments, thanking the partners and stakeholders whose contributions ensure that older persons at the home live with dignity and hope. He emphasized that beyond donations, personal visits significantly uplift the residents’ emotional well-being, giving them a sense of belonging and connection.
Suqoon Founder, Shakira Khawaja, commended Nairobi County for its steadfast commitment to safeguarding the welfare of older persons at Mji wa Huruma. She highlighted the collective spirit displayed by partners in attendance and affirmed that Suqoon has an ambitious roadmap for 2026 aimed at expanding support for elderly persons both at the home and across the country. She appealed for ongoing collaboration to sustain and scale these efforts.
Recently, the Nairobi County Government rolled out its Festive Season Giving Drive, targeting children and older persons living in county-run homes. The initiative invites staff and members of the public to contribute essential items, with the donation window running until 22nd December 2025.
To streamline participation, a central donation desk has been set up at City Hall, complemented by collection points across all 17 sub-counties at the Sub-County Administrators’ offices.
Present was Suqoon programme coordinator, Martha Kisaka, Chandaria Foundation representative Vincent Rabondo, Monicah Kinyajui from Women for Dementia Africa, representatives from the Safaricom Foundation, and staff from the Social Services Sub Sector.
