Digital Economy and Startups Sub-sector graduated its second cohort of youth under the International Certificate of Digital Literacy Africa (ICDL) programme, with nine graduates receiving laptops to support their continued learning and participation in the digital economy.
The graduation ceremony, held at the Innovation and Digital Economy Sector Lab at City Hall in partnership with Computer Aid Kenya, marked the completion of an intensive one-week digital literacy training programme.
Speaking during the event, Chief Officer, Digital Economy and Startups, Wilson Gakuya lauded the success of the programme and the commitment demonstrated by the trainees. He said the initiative bridges the digital divide among Nairobi’s youth by providing practical ICT skills that can improve livelihoods and expand economic opportunities.
Mr. Gakuya challenged the graduates to remain consistent in their learning journey and continue building on the foundation established during the training.
County Director, Digital Economy and Start-ups Elizabeth Ndungu congratulated the graduates for their dedication and resilience throughout the training. She underscored the growing importance of technology and innovation in shaping careers and businesses, urging participants to leverage their new skills to unlock opportunities in the digital economy. “Digital literacy is no longer optional. It is a critical tool for personal growth, employment and entrepreneurship,” she said, encouraging the graduates to pursue excellence and remain adaptable in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
Computer Aid Kenya representative Martin Kuria reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to expanding digital literacy across the country. He reminded the beneficiaries of laptops donated to take proper care of the laptops provided through the programme and remain actively engaged through the programme’s communication platforms.
Programme instructor Mugambi Muriuki encouraged the graduates to use their newly acquired knowledge to create positive change within their communities. He described digital skills as a resource that grows when shared, noting that empowering others with knowledge strengthens society as a whole.
Mr. Muriuki also recognized outstanding performers among the nine graduates, with Audrey Josephine and Audrey Ayodo receiving special recognition for their exemplary performance during the training.
Speaking on behalf of the graduates, Audrey Ayodo expressed gratitude to Nairobi County and Computer Aid Kenya for the opportunity. She said the programme had significantly enhanced their digital competencies while exposing them to new opportunities in technology and innovation. “The training has given us practical skills that will support our personal growth, education and future careers. The laptops provided will also help us continue learning beyond the classroom,” she said.
The graduation of the second ICDL cohort marks another step in Nairobi County’s efforts to expand access to digital skills among young people, equipping them with practical knowledge and confidence to pursue opportunities in education, employment and entrepreneurship.
