Nairobi County has stepped up efforts to strengthen digital safety by training staff on data protection and child online safety as part of ongoing initiatives to promote responsible digital service delivery.
The one-day capacity-building programme, held at Harambee Ward and organized by the Digital Economy and Startups (DES) Sub-sector in partnership with Talent Plus Academy, brought together county staff from the Innovation and Digital Economy, Boroughs, Green Army and Social Services sectors. Facilitated by experts from the Communications Authority of Kenya, the training strengthened participants’ capacity to protect personal data and promote child online safety.
Speaking during the training session, Director, Digital Economy and Startups, Elizabeth Ndun’gu said the county’s digital transformation agenda must be anchored on privacy, accountability and cybersecurity. She reminded public officers that protecting personal data and organizational data is both a legal and ethical obligation, urging them to collect, process, store and share information only for authorized purposes while safeguarding citizens’ data from misuse and unauthorized access.
She also stressed the need for collective action by parents, government institutions, county staff and communities to protect children from cyberbullying, online exploitation, harmful content and digital scams.
Participants were taken through the principles of data protection, the rights of data subjects, secure handling of personal information and compliance with Kenya’s Data Protection Act.
Harambee Ward Administrator Ms. Leah Nguru lauded the partnership between Nairobi County and its partners and encouraged county staff to actively participate in the sessions and apply the knowledge gained in their daily work, noting that protecting personal information and ensuring children’s online safety is a shared responsibility for every public officer.
CEO, Talent Plus Academy’s Grace Mugnai-Njuguna echoed the call, urging participants to become champions of responsible digital technology use within their workplaces and communities.
Communications Authority of Kenya led by Senior Officer, Public Awareness and Empowerment, Mary Kiuma took staff through practical sessions on child online protection, highlighting common online risks facing children, cyberbullying prevention, online grooming awareness, safe internet practices and available reporting mechanisms. The interactive discussions allowed participants to share real-life experiences from their respective departments, deepening their understanding of compliance requirements and best practices for safeguarding personal information.
The training concluded with the Communications Authority distributing Child Online Protection booklets and child protection infographics for display at innovation hubs across the county. The materials are expected to serve as ongoing awareness resources as the county continues to strengthen data protection, promote responsible digital citizenship and create a safer digital environment for residents, particularly children.
