Nairobi County actively working towards a waste management system that is inclusive, efficient and Sustainable

The County Director of Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change Mr. JP Malawi outlined Nairobi City County’s intervention plans towards tackling solid waste management, during his presentation on Solid waste management paradigm shift in urban realm at the Second Sessions of Kenya Urban Forum held in Naivasha from 17th to 19th June, painting a promising future picture of a better, cleaner and green City.

The event held under the theme: The Future is Urban: Driving Kenya’s Vision for Urban transformation through Inclusive, Resilient and Sustainable Development, aimed at facilitating knowledge sharing, strengthening multi-level collaboration, leverage global and regional urban agendas, assess climate action and urban ,enhance institutional adaptive capacity as well as promote stakeholder engagement and best practices among other things.

While highlighting the importance of proper solid waste management in ensuring a clean and healthy environment for all, he outline County’s plan to implement waste segregation at source, improve recycling facilities and increase public awareness on the importance of proper waste disposal.

“The County of Nairobi is in the process of establishing a waste to energy facility at the Dandora dumpsite. This innovative approach will help generate renewable energy from the city’s waste, reducing environmental pollution.” He mentioned.

The County Director emphasized the need for collaborative efforts from all stakeholders to achieve these goals and urged everyone to play their part in keeping Nairobi clean and green. He expressed opt that with collective action and commitment, Nairobi City will become a model of sustainable urban development in Kenya.

KUF is a national multi-stakeholder platform convened by the State Department for Housing and Urban Development to promote dialogue and action on sustainable urbanization.

Modeled on the UNs World Urban Forum, the workshop brought together: National & county governments, Development partners, Private sector, Academia, Civil society and Local communities in an effort to help shape Kenya’s urban development agenda.
