Nairobi, 27th November 2023

Nairobi City County held the Nairobi run against GBV marathon at the Green park terminus as part of the 16 days of activism against gender based violence led by County Executive Committee Member for Inclusivity, Public participation and customer service Dr. Anastasia Nyalita who flagged off the event together with the Chief guest cabinet secretary for Gender, culture, arts and heritage Hon. Aisha Jumwa.
Gbv2Dr. Nyalita said “we want to thank our partners for walking this journey with us. From the county perspective, I want to state that we have a very vibrant and committed team. Am also proud to say that we are the only county that has a safe house and we are working with the national government and partners to make sure that we sensitize the community on matters of gender based violence and as a county I want to affirm our commitment to this cause.”

The Nairobi run against GBV is part of 16 days’ activism aiming to raise awareness against gender based violence in the community. The 16 days’ activism campaign was started by activists at the inauguration of the Women’s Global Leadership Institute in 1991. It is used as an organizing strategy by individuals and organizations around the world to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.
Gbv9County Chief officer for Gender Ms. Maryam Dahir emphasized on the county’s commitment to end gender based violence. She said “This run is rooted in solidarity, aiming to amplify the voices of survivors and raise awareness about the pervasive issue of GBV. Together through the run we will break the silence, challenge societal norms and work towards a future where every individual can live free from the shadows of violence.”

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that kicked off on 25 November, themed ” The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women” and runs until 10th December.
