Nairobi City County moves to lay groundwork for a future clean transport

Nairobi’s transport system is set for a major shift as the County commences plans to transition from the high emission modes of transport to cleaner alternatives, with electric vehicle public charging infrastructure framework expected to shape the transformation.

” We are not just talking about charging stations, we are laying the ground work for a cleaner, more efficient transport system, one that puts people first and pollution behind.” Remarked Mr. Ibrahim Auma, the County Executive Committee Member, Mobility and Works.
Cleantransp3Mr. Auma who was addressing stakeholders at the Co- creation workshop on the development of Nairobi’s Electric Vehicle charging installation guidelines, described the initiative as the kind of future the City of Nairobi needs, one that is more sustainable, inclusive and resilient aligning fully with Kenya’s Climate commitment, vision 2030, National Climate Action Plan and the Nairobi City County Climate Action plan which prioritizes a shift from high emission modes of transport to a cleaner alternatives.

The Electric Vehicle charging infrastructure is expected to guide the development of reliable, accessible and fast charging options across Nairobi.” Fast charging for cars, battery swapping for boda bodas and clear safety standards will be part of the plan”. Mr. Auma said.
Cleantransp 1To ensure a successful transition, the Mobility and Works County Executive Member called for active involvement and participation of all transport industry actors including private sector investment, automotive innovation, research support and community engagement, adding that the transition cannot be driven by government alone.

The workshop was supported by the UN- Habitat, Roam Kenya, co-sponsored by the

United Nations Environment Programme(UNEP) and attended by various stakeholders who are collaboratively working on refining the draft guidelines through a stakeholder driven dialogue.
