Nairobi 31st October,2019.
Nairobi City County Government has today officially launched the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine against cervical cancer, targeting close to 40,000 ten (10) year old girls in the City,at Westlands Health Centre.
The vaccine will be administered free of charge to girls aged 10 years in all Immunizing health facilities across the nation. The vaccine which has been proved to be safe will be given in two doses,six months apart.
H.E the Governor Mike Sonko in a speech read on his behalf by the County Executive Environment who doubles up as the Ag.CEC Health Ms. Veska Kangogo assured Nairobians that the HPV vaccine has been approved and recommended by the Kenya Ministry of Health and other regulatory bodies.”I appeal to parents of 10 year old girls to allow them be given the vaccine in order to get protection from cervical cancer. Let us all join hands to make Kenya free from Vaccine Preventable Diseases.” Said the Governor.
The Governor also reaffirmed his administration’s committment in patnership with the national government towards control,elimination and eradication of infectious diseases in the country. He added that the county aims to reverse the incidence and prevalence of cervical cancer disease by introducing HPV vaccination to all 10 year old girls.
Ms. Veska said the Governor is committed to ensuring that Nairobians get the best health services. She called on the girls to also embrace education for better lives.
The County Chief Officer for Health Mr. Mohamed Sahal urged the parents and guardians to take advantage of the free vaccine.
Others present were the Westlands Sub-County Adminstrator,Ward Administrator, County Director Health Services, Deputy Director Health Services,Westlands MCA,area Assistant County Commissioner, and other County Health Officers.
