Nairobi 15th February 2024
Nairobi City County Government Business and Hustler Opportunity sector today conducted Public Participation forums on the construction of New Modern Markets in 7 sub counties which include Westlands, Roysambu, Starehe, Embakasi east, Embakasi North, Dagoretti south and Kibra.
The County Government in collaboration with the National government through the state department for housing and urban development intends to construct 20 new markets within the next 4 years across the various sub counties with an objective of making Nairobi a City of Order, dignity, hope and opportunities for all.
Markets are a major source of employment within and around East Africa region said the Director for Markets Ms. Joyce Kyengo while addressing participants in Kariokor social hall, “Currently, the county manages slightly over 8000 stalls across the 47 markets which are insufficient due to the increase of lack of formal employment, loss of jobs and the ever increasing rural-urban migration hence the need to construct new markets in order to increase trading spaces for both formal and informal traders.”
The new modern markets are expected to have the following impacts to Nairobi residents; unlimited supply of water, sufficient parking, affordability of items, ease in accessing food and other merchandise, conducive working environment with sufficient lighting and security to enable 24 hour operations and creation of employment for youths, women and PWDs.
The Markets and Trade sub sector embarked on commencement of the process of construction of these markets by identification of areas that have potential, availability of land and the County integrated Development plans. The ground breaking has been done for Mutuini Market in Dagoretti South.
