Nairobi City County Government Leads First-Ever World Oral Health Day Celebrations, Promoting ‘A HAPPY MOUTH FOR A HAPPY BODY’ Campaign

Nairobi 20th March 2024

Nairobi City County Government commemorated the first ever World Oral Health Day (WOHD) celebrations whose theme from 2024 to 2026 is “A HAPPY MOUTH FOR A HAPPY BODY.” The County marked the celebrations with a procession from Moi Avenue primary school to City hall and back to the school where the County Dentists with support from esteemed oral health partners offered screening and free dental treatment to children and staff the school.

WOHD is a day that is celebrated all over the world to bring awareness to oral health diseases and ailments such as Dental Caries, Periodontal Diseases and Dental Fluorosis, just to name a few. Oral health conditions share modifiable risk factors with other non-communicable diseases and Poor Oral Health has been linked to malnutrition, poor control of Diabetes mellitus, premature birth and low birth weight in pregnant women.
Wohd11Speaking on behalf of County Chief Officer for Medical Services Dr. Irene Muchoki, the Director for health products and technology Dr. Norah Maore said, “Over the years, investment in oral health has not been impressive. When H.E Gov. Sakaja took over county leadership in August 2022, for example, out of over 100 facilities, we only had 10 public hospitals with dental clinics in the county. There was also acute shortage of oral health Staff. We only had 13 Dental surgeons, 13 Community oral health officers and 1 Dental Technician serving 5 million Nairobians.

“The County has employed 21 Dentists, 22 Community Oral Health Officers and 10 Dental Technicians. Before Gov Sakaja, the last recruitment of Dental Officers was done in 2013 and for Community Oral Health Officers in 1997. This shows how committed our governor is on oral health matters and it will definitely go a long way in addressing the Human Resource challenges and ensuring dental services are brought closer to mwananchi. We shall be hiring more in the near future to meet our needs “she said.
Wohd10The Director for Dental Services Dr. PJ Muriuki said, “We are conducting community dental outreaches and camps to ensure services reach the undeserved as per the Governor Sakaja’s manifesto. Lady Northey Pediatric Dental clinic which is the only stand-alone dental children facility in the country meant to support the school oral health program. The services here are free of charge and the NCCG is in the process of expanding it for better services to our children, including those with special needs.”
Wohd7Said Dr. Muriuki, “As we celebrate WOHD today, I encourage all of us to brush our teeth two times a day after meals, to have a dental checkup at least twice a year and to avoid sweet, sugary and sticky foods. Please visit the dental clinics in our county and sub-county health facilities for reviews by our oral health team for proper diagnosis and treatment.”

The County is in the process of setting up and equipping dental services in all the Level 4 Health Facilities in the sub-counties to aid in achieving Universal Health Coverage. H.E the Governor will soon be opening dental Centres of excellence in MLK, Mutuini and Mbagathi hospitals.
