Nairobi, 9th July 2024.
Nairobi City County Environment Officers drawn from the 85 Wards and Chief Environment Officers from all the 17 Sub Counties underwent through Ward Climate Change Planning Committee Training in order to equip them with necessary knowledge as the direct implementers of Climate Change actions in the County.
The training was organized in partnership with ADA Consortium with the aim of enlightening the environment officers on Legal framework for climate change and the role of climate change institutions at County and Ward level.
The 3-day workshop saw the over 100 Officers who were divided into three groups each receive a whole day training from ADA Consortium facilitators.
Mr. Maurice Kavai, the County Deputy Director for Climate Change and Air Quality Monitoring said the training targeted all environment officers at the Sub-County and ward level in order to prepare them on the climate change actions implementation, because they are key pillars in the implementation process.
Each group was taken through the Climate Change legal framework and best ways to implement it, criteria for climate change projects in the Ward and components of climate change projects, steps of the climate change project cycle and principles of locally led adaptation.
The officers were also enlightened on the County Climate Change Financing Mechanism that facilitates the flow of climate change fund to county governments and strengthens public participation in the management and use of those funds in financing local adaptation to allow climate vulnerable communities participate in decision making over their resources.
Ms. Milka Chebii from the Financial Sector Deepening (FSD) Kenya called on the young environment officers to educate themselves more on the subject of climate change and the legal framework for climate change both in the county and the National government.
Ms. Pauline Makutsa, a facilitator from ADA Consortium expressed her gratitude for working with Nairobi County in capacity building the environment officers on matters climate change. She noted that once Nairobi City County completes Climate Change legal frameworks, Nairobi will be able to get Financing Locally- Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) funds aimed at delivering locally-led climate resilience actions and strengthening county and national governments’ capacity to manage climate risk.
ADA Consortium is working with Counties to enable them develop framework that will enable them get climate change financing.
