Nairobi City County, team led by Chief Officer, Gender and Inclusivity Ms. Maryam Dahir, Director Gender Jane Gichure and Pamela Karimi from the State Department for Gender, Nairobi,
and Nairobi City County SGBV coordinator, Ms. Roselyn Mukabana were key participants during the County Gender Sector Working Group quarterly meeting.
The event had representatives from national, county governments, and non-governmental agencies in attendance. This meeting set pace for discussions around putting in place a framework for facilitating cooperation and consultation between the National and County governments as provided for under Article 6 and 189 of the CoK.
Said Chief Officer, Dahir, “Today’s session was used to review progress of the gender sector working group since its inception in November 2020, as we onboard the new leadership. And as we also further consultations around the framework, mechanisms and cooperation for the Gender sector for both arms of government on issues of gender equality and women’s empowerment; these are issues that are very close to Governor Sakaja’s heart. Critical to operationalization of the framework at the county is the County Gender Sector working groups, which are co-chaired by the County Commissioner and County Executive Committee member responsible for gender.”
The session also discussed the Nairobi City County Gender Audit report 2021 dubbed, ” *Report of the Assessment of the State of Gender Equality and Women Empowerment within Nairobi City County.
Said Ms. Jane Gichure, Director Gender “Nairobi City County had undertaken the Gender audit in order to be able to give situational analysis and provide beacons/benchmarks for mainstreaming and integrating gender equality, equity and inclusion as we work towards Governor Sakaja’s vision of ensuring a city of Order, Dignity, Hope and Opportunity for all. I am also happy that the National Government has established various institutions with specific mandates to promote gender equality, equity, and empowerment of women and men in the development process.
Said Chief Officer, Dahir “Nairobi County under Governor Sakaja’s leadership will seek to cultivate strategic partnerships with relevant private sector actors, civil societies and women’s rights organizations to promote efforts and innovations that enhance gender equality and women empowerment across the city. We will also lobby for targeted budgets towards Gender Equality initiatives.”
