Nairobi City County Executive Committee Member for Roads, Transport and Public Works Mr. Mohammed Dagane has applauded National Transport and Safety Authority ( NTSA) for coming up with Usalama Barabarani Education and awareness programmes targeting vulnerable road users in Nairobi City County.
Mr. Dagane who is also the Chairman of Nairobi Transport and safety committee was speaking at the launch of the Nairobi County Usalama Barabarani Education and Awareness at children’s park along Nyerere road.
The awareness campaign is aimed at improving road safety in Nairobi, Kisumu, Nakuru, Kericho and Makueni Counties, targeting vulnerable road users such as boda boda riders, pillion passengers, pedestrians, school going children, pedal cyclists among others.
Said Mr. Dagane,” boda bodas are very important mode of transport in this city particularly in the last mile connectivity. That not withstanding, it is also important to mention to them that it is important to obey and follow traffic rules so as to care about the lives of others.”.
Mr. Dagane added that it is necessary to nature children’s behavior from childhood for them to be able to make meaningful contribution in the society in ensuring roads safety.
While thanking NTSA for their efforts in sensitizing road users on road safety, Nairobi City County Governor H.E Ann Kananu mentioned that her administration is doing alot in terms of road safety in the City. She said her government is ready to partner with other institutions in ensuring road safety in Nairobi.
The launch of Usalama Barabarani Education and Awareness is the second phase programme involving targeted engagements and sensitization that focus on behavior and attitude change.
Road safety materials such as boda boda reflective vests, branded aprons, cyclist vests, lollipop stop signs and reflective school bag covers to selected schools along high risk roads were distributed.
Usalama Barabarani initiative is supported by the European Union through a three (3) year grant to implement policies related to road safety and ensure the provision of safe, reliable and efficient road transport services.
