Markets Department inducts new market officers to prepare them to effectively serve traders and residents

Nairobi, 27th May 2026

Nairobi City County Markets and Trade Sub-Sector has inducted 445 new officers into the Markets Department as part of efforts to strengthen management and enhance service delivery across the city’s markets.

County Chief Officer in charge of Markets and Trade Ms. Jane Wangũi urged the officers to uphold professionalism, integrity and commitment in the discharge of their duties.
Marketsdept 1“Markets are key drivers of Nairobi’s economy and a source of livelihood for thousands of residents.” She said.

She challenged the recruits to work closely with traders and other stakeholders to ensure county markets remain clean, organized and business friendly.

Welcoming the new officers, the Chief Officer called on them to embrace teamwork, discipline and accountability. She pointed out that the induction was aimed at equipping the officers with knowledge on departmental operations, expectations and service standards.

“It is important for you to understand that you carry the image of the county with you and you are required to represent the county well. Maintain a positive attitude towards your work and support the Governor in delivering on his mandate,” she told the incoming staff.

The new officers are expected to support operations in Nairobi’s 53 existing formal and informal markets, as well as 20 upcoming modern markets being developed under Governor Sakaja’s plan. The modern markets are aimed at expanding trading space, creating jobs and improving working conditions for small scale traders.
Marketsdept 9County Director for Markets and Trading Services Mr. Joel Muli said the department expects renewed energy and improved efficiency with the new staff coming on board.

“With the new officers joining the department, we expect fresh ideas, energy and commitment. The department is now adequately staffed and we must remain dedicated and embrace a culture of putting work first.” He said.
Marketsdept 7The two-day induction forum held at Charter Hall was facilitated by officers drawn from the Markets, Environment, Monitoring and Evaluation, Human Resource, Customer Service, Performance Contracting, Revenue Administration and Inspectorate departments. The officers were sensitized on professionalism, customer service, code of ethics, national values, revenue collection, performance contracting and the mandate of the Markets Department.
