Making Nairobi work- Governor Sakaja delivers safer, cleaner and more accessible walkways for city residents..

Nairobi, May 15, 2026

The Nairobi City County Government has officially showcased the completed renovation and rehabilitation of major walkways within the Central Business District (CBD).

This milestone, part of the broader “Let’s Make Nairobi Work” initiative, marks a significant shift in urban planning by prioritizing Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) and the safety of millions of pedestrians who traverse the city daily.

The project, which spanned key arteries including Moi Avenue, Tom Mboya Street, and areas surrounding Kencom and the Ambassador terminal, involved the installation of modern cabro paving, high-quality victorian style LED street lighting, and the integration of smart solar benches and linger spaces for residents.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja emphasized that the facelift is more than just aesthetics, it is about restoring the dignity of the city’s residents.

“For far too long, the people of Nairobi have had to navigate broken pavements and chaotic streets. By fixing these walkways, we are reclaiming our city for the pedestrian. We are making Nairobi a place where you can walk with dignity, safety, and pride. This is the city we promised, and this is the city we are building together.” said Governor Sakaja.

The Governor further noted that the upgrades are strategically designed to reduce conflict between vehicles and walkers, ultimately easing the notorious CBD congestion.

”Our vision is clear, we want a city that works for everyone, from the corporate executive in a vehicle to the trader and the student on foot. By expanding these pedestrian spaces and installing proper barriers, we are not just beautifying the CBD; we are creating a more orderly and efficient environment that supports local businesses and enhances the overall urban experience.”

In addition to the physical infrastructure, the rehabilitation includes enhanced accessibility features such as ramps for People with Disabilities (PWDs) and improved drainage systems to ensure the walkways remain usable during the rainy seasons.

“This project is a testament to our commitment to sustainable urban development. We are not just patching up holes; we are laying a foundation for a modern, world-class capital. As we move into the next phase of our citywide overhaul, our focus remains on order, dignity,   hope, and opportunity for every Nairobian. Let’s keep making Nairobi work.”
