A Nairobi City County Couple; Mr. David Wamae and Maryann Wamae, practising urban farming from Karen, Langata Subcounty, was awarded best farmer countrywide after emerging winner in the National Farmers Award competition conducted early last month.
The award was presented to them by the Prime Minister Hon. Musalia Mudavadi at the just concluded Nairobi International Trade Fair, in ASK show ground.
Mr. and Mrs. Wamae, the owners of Rhino Park Dairy Resource Centre were ranked best farmer in the Country in the Small Scale Farmer fully commercialized category.
“This win comes from the enormous work the county is doing through supporting urban farmers with an aim of addressing food and nutrition security. We shall continue supporting and promoting urban Agriculture to ensure our people are food secure and also make a living from it.” Said Mr. Ibrahim Auma, the County Executive incharge of Green Nairobi
Early last month the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development in conjunction with Elgon Kenya Limited undertook the annual national farmers award judging. Nairobi City County presented the Wamae’s who were ranked among other entrants in the country and emerged the winner in Small Scale Farmer fully commercialized category.
Mr. & Mrs. Wamae keeps dairy animals. They also specialize in milk value addition; making dairy products like yoghurt and ice cream among others. They own 16 dairy cows and produces about 250 litres of milk per day.
The couple appreciated the County for offering them trainings and support through donation of dairy production equipment. They also encouraged youth to venture in agribusiness adding that agriculture pays.
Nairobi City County Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources SubSector has mentored and supported Nairobi farmers by offering training on best farming practises, climate smart agriculture, modern urban farming technologies as well as value chain addition.
The County has also through Agricultural Sector Development Support Programme ( ASDSP 11) capacity built farmers by equipping them with knowledge and supporting them with equipment.
Mr. & Mrs. Wamae through Mutero farmers group, benefited from Nairobi County’s Agricultural Sector Development Support Programme donations of a milk analyzer, cream separator, ice cream making machine and a chiller to boost them in their dairy production business.
Besides capacity building, the Food,Agriculture and Natural Resources SubSector has trained farmers on entrepreneurship, commercialization and mechanization as well as helping them in creating linkages.
