Nairobi City County Governor, H.E Ann Kananu today was a guest alongside Chief Justice, Martha Koome, the Director General Nairobi Metropolitan Services, Lieutenant General, Mohamed Badi and Mihango MCA, Paul Kados during the ground breaking ceremony of the Nairobi Small Claims Court construction site in Mihango.
Governor Kananu termed today’s event as a realization of a long-held vision in the Judiciary and a culmination of hard work and effort to ensure the construction of a facility that will ensure the provision of quick, inexpensive and expeditious informal process of serving justice to not only the residents of Mihango area, but its environs.
Said Governor Kananu, “I know the Small Claims Court will be key to enhancing access to justice both directly in terms of the expeditious determination of relevant matters; but also, importantly, in terms of reducing the caseload in the Magistrates’ Courts thereby enabling the reduction of backlog in various courts in Nairobi County.”
The County boss noted that the ground breaking event reflects the Judiciary’s continued commitment to ensuring its services are of tangible utility to Nairobi residents whose delegated sovereign authority the courts should solemnly exercise.
Nairobi residents are entitled to the right to access of justice as envisioned under Article 48 of the Constitution.
Added the Governor, “I am happy to note that once complete the Small Claims Court in this area will have the potential to significantly and positively impact access to justice in Kenya and Nairobi. it is my hope that we will see timely disposal of all proceedings before the Court. The adoption of the least expensive method and reasonable court fees.
I want to see equal opportunity to access judicial services; reduction of case backlogs; fairness of process; and more importantly simplicity of procedures. I know it will enhance the ease of doing business in the city of Nairobi and also be able to serve the common mwananchi with ease.”
The Governor expressed her confidence in Lady Justice Martha Koome who she said will ensure the implementation of the Small Claims.
Said Ms. Kananu, “I know that Under the Sustaining Judiciary Transformation (SJT) strategic blueprint and further incorporated into the Judiciary Strategic Plan 2019 – 2023 by retired Chief Justice Emeritus Maraga who had prioritized the implementation of the Small Claims Act 2016 under its first strategic area on access to justice. Lady Justice Martha Koome is here to ensure this commitment bears fruits.”
