Green Nairobi (Environment, Water, Food and Agriculture)

The sector has Three sub sectors that are responsible for the following functions:-

Environment Sub Sector Functions

  • Refuse removal, refuse dumps and solid waste disposal
  • Control of Air pollution, noise pollution and other public nuisances
  • Implementation of specific policies on natural resources and environmental conservation
  • County Parks and recreation facilities
  • Electricity and gas reticulation and energy regulation
  • Climate Change

Food Agriculture and Natural Resources Sub Sector Functions

  • Coordination of Nairobi City food systems
  • Ensure agricultural food safety
  • Crop, Livestock and fisheries development and management
  • Plant and animal disease and pest control
  • Animal control and welfare
  • Veterinary services (excluding regulation of the profession)
  • Promotion of Urban Forestry

Water and Sewerage Sub sector Functions

  • Water and Sanitation Services
  • Implementation of County specific water conservation and forestry policies through water resource users – local water catchment protection, implementation of sub-catchment management plans, participation in water allocation and issuance of permits, flood mitigation and land reclamation at County levels
  • Water pollution control – monitoring of water quality; and Enforcement of water quality standards
  • Borehole site identification and drilling – planning of rural water supply, development of rural water points and maintenance of water points
