Paris, 18 October 2023
Nairobi City County Governor Sakaja Johnson will today morning attend the high-level School Meals Coalition opening ceremony, where he will be representing the President.
The meeting has brought together various heads of states and ministers to deliberate on how to invest in sustainable food systems and climate change action through school meals.
In the meeting, Governor Sakaja will represent the county and speak about the ambitious ‘Dishi na County’ school feeding Programme launched by Nairobi City County in August 2023. The ‘Dishi na County’ Programme is committed to feed all children in public Early Childhood Development Education Centres and Primary schools with a nutritious meal each school day. The program is expected to improve nutritional status of learners, school attendance, performance, and transition rates for children in Nairobi.
“The biggest impact we have is not pegged on data or numbers, it is that the children know that somebody cares about them,” Governor Sakaja said yesterday when speaking to students at a side line meeting of his one-week official meeting in Paris, France.
The School Meals Coalition, of which Kenya is a member state, was formed by government for governments to move forward on key policy priority to improve and scale up school meal programmes to ensure that every child has the opportunity to receive a healthy, nutritious meal in school by 2030.
Later today morning the governor will join a panel at the Ambition Africa 2023 Event to discuss “Africa smart cities: Towards a sustainable urban mobility”.
