Governor Sakaja Breaks Ground for Mutuini Market, Unveiling Ambitious Plan for Modern Markets and Community Well-being

Wednesday, February 7th, 2024

Nairobi City County Governor H.E. Johnson A. Sakaja officiated the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Mutuini Market in Dagoreti South Sub County. With a budget of 245 million shillings, the project is expected to be completed within the next six months.

Mutuini market is one of five modern markets, including Karen, Juja in Mihang’o, Kahawa West, and Riruta, planned for construction in the 2023/2024 financial year. This initiative fulfills Governor Sakaja’s manifesto promise to deliver 20 markets to Nairobi residents within five years.
Mutuinimarket10Speaking at the event, Governor Sakaja emphasized his commitment to both constructing markets and providing financial support to traders. “The 1.5 billion shilling Biashara Fund will be distributed to all 85 wards this year,” he announced. “I urge the area leadership to fairly allocate spaces at Mutuini market to ensure everyone has the opportunity to participate.”
Mutuinimarket14These modern markets will feature amenities like social halls, daycares, constant water supply, bus terminals, smoke detectors, and adequate ventilation to prevent fires. Recognizing the drug and substance abuse issue, Governor Sakaja also pledged to build a rehabilitation center within Mutuini, adding to the existing one in Sinai. He further directed his administration to prevent hazardous businesses like gas refilling stations from operating near residential areas.
Mutuinimarket16Both Dagoreti South MP Hon. John Kiarie and Mutuini Ward MCA Hon. Martin Mbugua praised Governor Sakaja’s initiatives for creating job opportunities through markets, the green army and the school feeding program that currently feeds 184,000 pupils that has reduced the number of children that miss school due to hunger.
Mutuinimarket17The ceremony was attended by MCAs, County Executive Members, County Chief Officers, and Directors from various departments, local administrators, and representatives from the National Government.
