Nairobi City County Transport and Safety Committee (CTSC) on Friday visited several areas in the Central Business District (CBD) in a bid to assess the traffic situation and also to identify key challenges affecting traffic and safety in the city Centre, as they work on laying the foundation for interventions to effectively address the challenges.
During the tour, the committee led by the County Director for Public Transport Eng. Moses Kuiyaki observed a number of challenges amongst them; occupied pedestrian walkways by hawkers and Matatus, illegal pick up and drop off points by public service vehicles, double parking, illegal parking zones and potholes caused by the heavy rains.
The committee agreed on the need for enforcing stricter traffic regulations on matatus, boda bodas and tricycles (Tuk tuks), conducting regular audits and inspections to assess the safety, reliability and efficiency of the road system in the city, while pledging to continue working towards improving transport infrastructure and safety in Nairobi City County for the benefit of all residents.
In order to find sustainable solutions to the traffic challenges facing Nairobi CBD, Mr. Ibrahim Auma, the County Executive Member for Mobility and Works, said the committee will be working towards improving transport infrastructure, as well as engaging with public transport stakeholders to address their concerns and ensure their cooperation in adhering to traffic regulations.
“Working together with various stakeholders, the CTSC committee aims to create a more efficient and safe transport system in Nairobi CBD for the benefit of all residents and visitors. Together, we can overcome the traffic challenges and make Nairobi a more sustainable and livable city.” Stated Mr. Auma.
At the same, the County Executive Member reminded all road users to make a commitment to adhere to road safety practices in order to ensure a safer festive season for everyone. “With increased traffic on the roads and more people attending events, it’s crucial that we prioritize safety for ourselves and others. He added.
The CTSC committee which is chaired by the County Executive Committee Member for Mobility and Works Mr. Ibrahim Auma is mandated to oversee the management of road transport system in the county and also tasked with advising National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) on matters affecting the road transport system within the county, in addition to preparing and submitting audit reports to the NTSA on safety, reliability and efficiency of the road transport system.
The committee consists of representation from the County Mobility and Works Sector, Kenya police service (Traffic Nairobi area), public transport stakeholders, National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) secretariat, Nairobi County security and compliance officers, representatives for people living with disabilities, the regional commissioner and transport expert nominee.
