Empowering Boda Boda riders to save lives

Nairobi 20th August, 2025

Nairobi City County, the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), and the National Transport and Safety Authority have launched a joint initiative to train 1,200 Boda Boda riders in basic life support and road safety. The training program will be rolled out in three KMTC campuses ( Nairobi, Mathari and Karen) over a one month period, with four weekly cohorts each consisting of 100 participants per campus.

The training is expected to equip the riders with critical lifesaving skills for pre-hospital emergency care, strengthen coordination between first responders and local emergency services and integrate road safety education into emergency response training. The initiative also seeks to scale the program nationwide, particularly along key transport corridors.
Empowerboda 3 1Mr. Ibrahim Auma, the Nairobi County Executive Committee Member in charge of Mobility & Works, and the Chairperson of the County Transport and Safety Committee, indicated  that Boda Boda riders and their  passengers remain among the most frequent victims of road accidents in Kenya, largely due to lack of emergency response capacity especially at the pre-hospital level.

“Boda Boda riders are often the first to arrive at the accident scenes yet they lack the essential lifesaving skills needed to intervene”, he said.

According to Mr. Auma who spoke at KMTC Nairobi campus during the launch of the training, the trained Boda Boda riders will be able to provide immediate assistance at the crash sites, thereby reducing fatalities and the risk of long term disabilities. The training will also empower them with knowledge to prevent accidents and promote safe riding behavior.
Empowerboda 4“By empowering Boda Boda riders with lifesaving skills, we can reduce preventable deaths and improve emergency care outcomes in Kenya. With trained riders as first responders, we are building a safer Nairobi. Together we are rewriting the story of road safety and proving that every second counts when it comes to saving lives,” remarked Mr. Auma.

He added that more strategic partners will be brought on board to strengthen and sustain the initiative for long- term impact.
