Deputy Governor Muchiri in Rio De Janeiro to attend the Annual Milan Urban Food Policy Pact forum

Nairobi City County Deputy Governor, Njoroge Muchiri is amongst African Mayors who  attended an Inspirational closed door meeting specifically for African Mayors hosted by Carlo Petrini, an Italian gastronome, sociologist, writer and activist, founder of the Slow Food association.

Deputy Governor Muchiri is in Rio De Janeiro attending the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact forum, a forum that is an annual event organized primarily by cities for cities, offering a unique opportunity to exchange knowledge, build partnerships and celebrate their progress in the implementation of their food policies and strategies  geared towards transforming food systems.  Dialogue and technical exchange among signatories are enriched by the participation of relevant international organizations and institutions. Over the years, the MUFPP Global Fora have become a regular occurrence for cities and key actors in the global urban food agenda.

The closed door  session will accord Deputy Governor Muchiri an opportunity to meet, exchange food policy and food strategy ideas with other like minded Municipal leaders as well as offer a  network platform with key African Cities representative.

Top of Deputy Governor Muchiri discussion agenda include:-

  1. The need to form a formidable network for African Mayors and use this to drive the continents agenda.
  2. Engage in beneficial MoU agreements to pave way for exchange of ideas and possible benchmarking and worker exchange programs.
  3. To grow Nairobi’s partnership levels. Some of these key Cities could be invited to showcase their products during the Annual ASK Trade Fair event as part of partnerships with Nairobi City County.
  4. African cities on the MUFPP network to support Nairobi’s bid to historic the first ever MUFPP forum. one city to bid to host
  5. Form a caucus with Mayors present and formally identify leadership teams to drive African agenda.

The Mayors in attendance included; Adanich Abebi, Mayor of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Adama Sangare, Mayor of Bamako, Mali, Oumarou Dogari Moumouni, Mayor of Niamey, Niger,  Francisco Carvalho, Mayor of Praia, Cape Verde, Manuel de Araújo, Mayor of Quelimane, Moçambique and Sade Gawanas, Mayor of Windhoek, Namibia.

The event was facilitated  by the Vice Mayor of Milan, Ms. Anna Scavuzzo who is also incharge of Food Policy.

Said Deputy Governor, Muchiri, “I am honored, delighted and humbled to be amongst the African Municipal leaders attending the 8th MUFPP forum in Rio. I am looking forward to sharing Governor Sakaja Johnson’s Food system strategy and vision for Nairobi which is ‘To be a food secure city with affordable, accessible, nutritious and safe food for all Nairobi  residents.”

The Deputy Governor said this could only  be achieved through increase in food production, stable food supply and incomes, reduction of food losses and good welfare of food consumers.

 

Said DG Muchiri, “I know Nairobi will be able to achieve the increase in food production. We will put in place massive awareness programmes and ensure we partner with our linkages and partners to make sure this comes into fruition as guided by the Food system strategy document. Under our leadership Nairobi will never be the same again because we will ensure order and dignity as well as Hope and opportunity for all is realized.”

The Deputy Governor also met with the Mayor of Rio De Janeiro, Mr. Eduado Paes.
