Meru County hosted this year’s 10th edition of the Kenya Inter-County Sports and Cultural Association (Kicosca) Games.
The annual showpiece was held between August 20 and 26 at various venues in Meru. The opening event was officiated by the Deputy president of the Republic of Kenya H.E. Rigathi Gachagua.
Among the venues that hosted the six-day extravaganza include Kinoru Stadium, Meru Teachers Training College, Meru Polytechnic, KEMU University, Meru University and Meru School.
Meru was to host the event after Kericho but the games were canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic
The counties battled it out in different sports disciplines, with Nairobi bagging trophies in Men’s handball 1st position, Women’s handball 3rd Position, basketball men 2nd position, women basketball 1st position, netball 1st position, squash 1st position, badminton 1st position, chess 2nd position, Men’s volleyball 1st position, ajua 3rd Position, table tennis 1st position, darts 1st position, Set piece 1st position. Cultural dance and choir competition where we emerged top 3.
County Executive for Talent Skills Development and Care Ms. Rosemary Kariuki who lead the team in Meru said “We will explore strategies to retain and engage young talent, ranging from creating an inclusive workplace to providing a platform where they can build their career in sports progression and also monetizing sports. By adopting these strategies, we can foster a thriving environment that not only retains young employees but also harnesses their potential for long-term success.” I will personally focus on improving and ensuring that our sports men and women are well trained equipped and that their needs are addressed conclusively”
County Executive for Mobility and Works Mr. Brain Mulama said “I am Proud of the team and happy that we have made it this far the high discipline you have showed is impeccable. Let’s be strategic even when employing let’s consider the sporting talent so that we get a strong team as we nurture talent. I have seen the capability of the players and I can assure you it will take some work to beat this team”
County Executive for Boroughs, Sub county Administration and Personnel Mr. Patrick Mbogo while Congratulating the team said “there is need to have Nairobi County reward the players that have won in different categories. I will personally take it upon myself to ensure this proposal is implemented I will table this proposal in the next cabinet session so that we can discuss further and we can make a decision about it. With this in place I can assure you that next year we will sweep all the trophies in the KICOSCA games”
Chief Officer for Youth Talent and Sports Mr. Oscar Igaida told the participants that it is important their needs are looked into.
We will Propose at least an increment for all those who took 1st position in the different categories. We will work with youth to inculcate sports oriented skills and equip them with skills on how to develop talent in sports careers growth, and accessing opportunities. Sporting has become one of the most lucrative careers internationally. We aim to create an equitable society, develop a productive generation and to enable an inclusive economic growth through talent and entrepreneurial skills development inspired by innovation and technology.
Chief Officer for Social Services George Mutiso said “Seeing these trophies lined here is proof that we have the potential to become the best country wide. I want to encourage each and everyone in this team to keep up the great work. Nairobi County is focused on Youth empowerment for inclusive development, wealth creation and sustainable employment into posterity. Through sports youth can make careers and develop their talents to make money in which ever sports career you choose”
A record 35 counties participated in this year’s games. 28 counties took part last year’s event which was held in Kisumu in January,
The defending champions Nairobi City County rumbled with 34 counties in different categories that saw the capital take home over 15 trophies including Overall best and the most disciplined County.
