Creating a more sustainable, cleaner and greener Nairobi

In a bid to drive a sustainable, cleaner and greener Nairobi, Environment team led by the County Executive Committee Member for Green Nairobi Ms. Maureen Njeri held discussions with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Global Environment Facility (GEF) delegation to discuss potential areas of collaboration in fostering a sustainable City.

The discussions focused on crucial areas including; strengthening waste management systems and promoting circular economy approaches, integrating green infrastructure and ecological restoration to enhance urban resilience and improving the state of Nairobi’s parks and green spaces to promote environmental conservation and public wellbeing.

“By working together to strengthen waste management systems, promote circular economy approaches and enhance urban resilience through green infrastructure, we are laying the groundwork for a more environmentally conscious and resilient Nairobi. Additionally, the emphasis on improving the state of Nairobi’s parks and green spaces not only promotes environmental conservation but will also enhance quality of life for the City residents.” Stated the Green Nairobi Executive Member.
Sustainnrb 3The two teams also deliberated on ways to strengthen existing environmental laws and policies to ensure effective management & compliance, enhancing mechanisms for enforcement, monitoring and sustainability initiatives to ensure long term impact as well as peer to peer learning to strengthen environmental partnerships for best practice exchange.

Ms. Njeri noted that the partnership holds a great promise for the future of Nairobi, paving the way for a more sustainable and environmentally friendly city for generations to come.

UNEP team led by Ms. Mirey Attah, the Climate Change Division Head of Adaptation and Resilience Branch UN, reaffirmed UNEPs commitment to working closely with Nairobi City County and ensuring the County’s active participation in decision making and collaborative problem solving to address environmental challenges effectively.

The Green Nairobi Executive Member was accompanied by the Director, Environment and Natural Resources Mr. John Paul Malawi, Deputy Directors; – Mr. Omwenga Walter (Waste Disposal), Ms. Susan Nyambura (Parks and Natural Resources), Mr. Maurice Kavai (Climate Change and Air Quality) and Ms. Christine Kivuva (Assistant Director, Environmental Monitoring, Compliance and Enforcement)
