Mombasa, 10th March, 2021
The Nairobi County Trade, Commerce, Tourism and Cooperatives sector led by the County Executive Winnie Gathagu are currently in Mombasa to develop the sectors trade policy and market management model.
The formulation process which is at an advanced stage was necessitated by numerous challenges hindering efficient and effective service delivery from the sector.
Speaking at the event, which was formerly unveiled by the acting County Secretary, Dr. Jairus Musumba, Trade County Executive, Ms. Gathagu, said “This process was initiated by the sector in January 2019 and incorporated all related sectors of the county together with relevant stakeholders. Several stakeholder engagement meetings were held, culminating into this final workshop whose objective is to ensure that the policy addresses all issues and challenges faced by the industry players both in the public and private sector and proposes feasible interventions
The event is currently being attended by the following Government agencies concerned with Kenya’s legal frameworks; Ministry of Trade, Industry and Enterprise Development, Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban development, Nairobi Metropolitan Services, Kenya Revenue Authority, Kenya Private Sector Alliance, Kenya Association of Manufacturers, Kenya Institute of Public Policy Alliance, Kenya Law Reforms Commission and Executive office of the president SME advisory.
The policy issues and interventions that will be covered include;
-Enhancing functionality and utilization of space in public markets
-Inculcating entrepreneurial skills among traders in Nairobi City County
-Creating a cohesive and effective model for management of trade markets
-Providing a conducive legal and regulatory framework to govern and enforce effective trade
-Enhanced coordination and synergies among actors in trade value chains
-Addressing emerging markets issues
-Mitigating risks in the Nairobi trading frameworks
-Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) trade financing
-Coordinated data collection, collation and dissemination of trade information.
