NAIROBI: 11th December 2023.
County Executive for Talents, Skills Development and Care Ms. Rosemary Kariuki accompanied by the Chief Officer Youth Talent and Sports Sub sector Oscar M. Igaida held a stakeholders meeting at a Nairobi Hotel to discuss the formulation of a County Sports Policy.
Said the County Executive “As we embark on this journey to formulate a comprehensive sports policy, let us prioritize inclusivity, infrastructure development, and grassroots engagement. Lack policies and legal framework for sports development, inadequate standard sporting infrastructure, untapped sports, talent and unstructured organization of sports programs, safeguarding of sports men and women’s sexual and gender based violence among others are some of the challenges facing the sporting space in the County. Policies will address these challenges.”
She said “inclusivity is paramount. Our policy must ensure that every member of our community, regardless of age, gender, or ability, has the opportunity to participate in and benefit from sports. By fostering diversity in our sports programs, we strengthen the social fabric of our community and promote physical well-being for all.”
“Infrastructure development plays a pivotal role. We must invest in modern and accessible sports facilities, creating spaces that inspire participation and competition. This not only enhances the overall sporting experience but also attracts events, driving economic growth and putting our community on the map.” She added.
The Chief Officer Mr. Igaida said “grassroots engagements are the foundation of a thriving sports culture. Let us encourage local sports clubs, schools, and organizations, to provide support for training programs and events at the grassroots level. Nurturing talent from a young age ensures a continuous pool of athletes who can proudly represent our community on larger stages.”
He said the formulation of a County sports policy is not merely a bureaucratic exercise. It is a commitment to the well-being and development of our community. By embracing inclusivity, investing in infrastructure, and fostering grassroots engagement, we lay the groundwork for a vibrant sports culture that will define our community for generations to come.
The County Executive was accompanied by Director Sports Linet Boyani, Deputy Director Harry Mwahari , Assistant Directors Catherine Githinji among others.
