“Building Dignity, Not Just Walls” — County Executive Brian Mulama Applauds UN Sacco Transformative CSR at Mji wa Huruma

Nairobi, 31st July 2025

A spirit of compassion and partnership was on full display as Nairobi County Government, in collaboration with UN Sacco and Mabusi Contractors Ltd., broke ground on the construction of a new perimeter wall and officially opened a modern ablution block at Mji wa Huruma, a home for the elderly in Nairobi.
Dignity 7Speaking at the ceremony, the County Executive for Talent, Skills, Development and Care, Brian Mulama, described the event as a testament to the power of partnership and compassion. “On behalf of H.E. Governor Johnson Sakaja and Mji wa Huruma family, we extend our sincere gratitude to UN Sacco for this impactful gesture of corporate social responsibility. This wall is not just infrastructure, it is a symbol of dignity, safety, and care. CSR is not charity. It is shared responsibility that ensures no one is left behind.”

County Chief Officer for Social Services, Tony Michael Kimani, echoed this sentiment, saying, “This partnership goes beyond construction. The perimeter wall will secure the facility and unlock the land’s potential for sustainable food production, not only for Mji wa Huruma but also for Nairobi County’s four children’s homes in Kayole, Makadara, Shauri Moyo, and Joseph Kang’ethe”.
Dignity 12Mr. Kimani further revealed plans by partners to donate seedlings and fertilizers once the wall is complete, alongside discussions with a potential partner to equip a bakery within the home. This initiative will empower Mji wa Huruma to produce wholesome baked goods for its residents, the children’s homes and even generate income through commercial sales.

Director for Cooperatives, Dolphin Aremo, emphasized the long-term value of intergenerational care, saying, “These are our parents. We must teach the next generation the importance of caring for the elderly. UN SACCO has set a benchmark for what true social responsibility looks like.”

Deputy Director for Family and Children Services, Robert Muema, highlighted the practical gains of the wall. “With the construction now underway, we can finally breathe easier. It not only secures the residents but also allows us to use the land productively, a key step toward food security and self-sufficiency.”

UN Sacco Chair, James Ouka, reaffirmed their commitment and said, “We are proud to be part of this community and committed to seeing the completion of this project. Our engagement remains constructive, with the shared goal of supporting and uplifting this home.”

Mabusi Contractors Ltd., led by Director Prof. Joshua Karani emphasized their broader contribution and stated that the construction was more of service to humanity. “In addition to building the wall, we are also going to offer capacity building in Nairobi County’s four children’s homes through youth training, counselling, and internship placements.”

In charge of Mji wa Huruma Magret Ndichu, expressed heartfelt appreciation and said “From the groundbreaking of the wall to the new ablution block, today marks the fulfilment of a long-awaited dream. These developments restore dignity, enhance safety, and reflect what is possible through meaningful partnership.”
Dignity 18As a symbol of sustainability and renewal, County Executive Brian Mulama and the patners including County Officers planted banana stalks to mark the first crop on the now-secured grounds, signaling the start of food production and the County’s commitment to self-reliance and nourishing care homes.

Also present was County Chief Officer for Gender and Inclusivity, Maryam Dahir, County Director for Gender, Jane Wamuguru, Fredrick Ogutu, Assistant Director for Family and Social Welfare, Assistant Director, Children Services, Rosemary Kibathi, Assistant Director, Gender, Mercy Wanjohi among other County Officers, representatives from UN Sacco and Mabusi Contractors Ltd., residents of Mji wa Huruma.
