Another stride in infrastructural improvement, in Nairobi City County’s informal settlement areas.

Nairobi City County residents living in informal settlements continue to benefit from an initiative by the County Government in conjunction with the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing, and Urban Development-State Department for Housing and Urban Development, dubbed Kenya Informal Settlements Improvement Project (KISIP II)

Speaking during the Introduction of KISIP II, Lot 1 Contractor, Nairobi City County’s KISIP II coordinator, Ms. Jecinta Charles thanked all the stakeholders for their collaboration since the discussions that are now turning into actions, began.

Ms. Charles further called upon the members of the community led by the Settlement Executive Committees members (SEC) to fully support the works being undertaken to ensure the goal that is to enhance the lives and livelihoods of those living in the informal settlements is realized.

Present to receive the contractor were SEC representatives drawn from each of the three settlement schemes. Speaker after speaker the community representatives applauded the milestone and committed to support the works to ensure that the assignment will be accomplished within the stipulated timeline, of 12 months from commencement date.

Improvement works for KISIIP II Lot 1 will be undertaken by Rural Distributors Enterprises Limited.

Their scope of works includes construction of roads, footpaths, storm water drainage, street lighting and sewer works in Embakasi Sokoni, Kayole Soweto and Kahawa Soweto informal settlements in Nairobi City County.

In Embakasi sokoni, the total length for road and drainage to be constructed will be about 0.603 Kms; Kahawa Soweto, total length for road and drainage works about 0.538Kms and in Kayole Soweto, a total length of 3.355kms for road, footpath and drainage works will be undertaken.

In Embakasi Sokoni the estimated cost for the project is Kshs 83.10 Million; Kayole Soweto Kshs 357.20 Million and Kahawa Soweto Ksh108.10 Million, all inclusive.

The works will be supervised by the Consultant; Tertiary Consulting Engineers LTD in joint venture with GA consultants LTD.

The project is funded by the World Bank, AFD France and European Union through the National Government of Kenya.

The introduction of KISIP II, Lot 1 Contractor was witnessed by a technical team from Nairobi City County led by KISIP II Coordinator Ms. Jecinta Charles, flanked by the Deputy Coordinator Ms. Martha Muthoni, a team of engineers, surveyors and finance team.

The Consultant team was led by Engineer Josephat Ndiku the resident Engineer for the project.

Kahawa Soweto community team was led by the SEC chairman Mr. Stephen Muriuki Kinyua; Kayole Soweto was led by Ms. Selma Adhiambo Okumu a member of SEC under the faith based organizations and Embakasi Sokoni was led by Mr. Samuel Nzuki the chairman of Grievance Redress Committees(GRC) which is part of the Settlement Executive Committee(SEC)
