Nairobi, 26th June 2025
Nairobi City County through its Air Quality Action plan has prioritized air quality as a cross cutting issue in its commitment to clean air.
“Our efforts in clean transport, improved waste management, renewable energy deployment and greening initiatives are all part of a larger picture to make a resilient, healthy and livable City”. Said Mr.JP Malawi, the County Director of Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change.
Mr. Malawi was speaking at a consultative meeting of the Nairobi Air Quality Working Group (N-Air) convened in partnership with Clean Air Fund through Breathe Cities Initiative and Environmental Compliance Institute ( ECI) to discuss the long term goals, strategies and collaborative approaches to address key issues related to air quality management and policy making in Nairobi City County.

He pointed out.
Additionally, Mr. Malawi said that the County is committed to leveraging data for action, mentioning that through the expansion of Nairobi’s air quality monitoring network, the County now has a better visibility of pollution hotspots and sources.
Speaking on deepening collaborations, Mr. Malawi cited clean air as a shared responsibility that requires combined efforts of transport planners, urban designers, health officials, legislators, educators and communities.
Mr. Maurice Kavai, the County Deputy Director of Climate Change and Air Quality Monitoring and a co- Chair of N- Air Committee, said that in future Nairobi looks forward to expanding air quality monitoring network from its current coverage of 89 locations to more locations. In addition, he mentioned that strengthening policy enforcement and vehicular emissions, and enhancing green infrastructure and clean energy transitions were part of key priority areas the county is looking to implement.
Nairobi City County is partnering with Clean Air Fund through the Breathe Cities Initiative and Environmental Compliance Institute to support workshops on improving air quality in Nairobi through multi- faceted regulatory approach, with a purpose to bring together stakeholders active in air quality management to discuss strategies to leverage air quality regulations, enhanced air quality monitoring network and data management system to reduce air pollution in Nairobi.
