Nairobi, 2nd April 2025
Nairobi Deputy Governor Njoroge Muchiri today joined, H.E First Lady of the Republic of Kenya Mrs. Rachel Ruto, on the occasion of celebrating world Autism awareness at the Kenya Institute of Special Education in Kasarani Nairobi.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how people interact with the world around them. Autism is a spectrum, meaning it affects each individual differently and to varying degrees.
Said H.E First Lady ” As we commemorate World Autism day under the theme “celebrate differences” this day reminds us that every child is unique, every individual has value and that our differences should unite us in a shared commitment to understanding, acceptance and inclusion. I am glad that this year’s autism awareness efforts have been organized under the banner of “Vijana Na Taifa” a movement by our young people .This is a testament to the power of youth in driving change and a precedent that as a Country we must nurture and emulate.”
Added Her Excellency “It is estimated that in Kenya approximately 4% of the population or one child in every 25 maybe living with autism spectrum disorder. This data calls us as a Nation to action, it is a wake-up call that we must do more to ensure children with autism receive the care, education and support they deserve.”
Said the Deputy Governor” Today We join the global movement, dedicated to understanding, acceptance, and celebration of neurodiversity. In our endeavor towards an inclusive Nairobi for all, we must move away from stereotypes and embrace the unique strengths and perspectives that each person brings in our society.”
Added Muchiri , “Government efforts alone are not enough ,since building a truly inclusive society requires a collective effort. It requires each one of us to cultivate a spirit of empathy, challenge our own biases, and actively work towards creating a society where everyone feels valued, respected, and with a sense of belonging.”
More than raising awareness, world Autism day is about fostering genuine understanding, actively listening to the voices of individuals with autism and their families, dismantling barriers – societal, physical, and attitudinal – that prevent these individuals from fully participating in matters of nation-building.
To realize the vision of H.E Governor Sakaja for a more inclusive environment, recognizing that the City thrives when all citizens are empowered to reach their full potential, the County Government of Nairobi has embarked on a number of initiatives aligned to the vision.
This includes enhanced access to quality education that caters to diverse learning needs, creating employment opportunities that recognize unique talents, and building public spaces that are accessible and welcoming to everyone.
Initiatives to support differently-abled individuals, including those with autism, and their families, collaborating with organizations dedicated to autism advocacy, investing in training for educators and healthcare professionals, and exploring ways to make the public transport and infrastructure friendlier for all, are part of the initiatives Nairobi City County has embraced.
The event was attended by leaders both from National and County Governments, Parents, caregivers and children among other stakeholders.
