10 Central Kitchens For School Feeding Program Approaching Completion

Nairobi -Sunday, 06 August 2023

Nairobi County is on course to deliver meals for for the 250,000 children in public schools from 10 central kitchens at the end of August.

Construction of the 10 central kitchens are in the final stages with contractors ready to hand over to the county.

During the launch in June Governor Sakaja Johnson said “10 kitchens in 10 weeks”. More than 250,000 children in Nairobi enrolled in public primary schools and ECDs will benefit from this noble initiative.
Kitchens2The centralized kitchens are being constructed in Baba Dogo Primary School, Bidii Primary School, Kwa Njenga Primary, Farasi Lane Primary, Muthangari Primary, Kayole One Primary, Njiru Primary, Toi Primary, Roysambu Primary and Racecourse Primary.

The modern state-of-art Industrial Area mega kitchen will provide at least 60,000 plates per day to back-up schools that might run shortage of meals.
Kitchens3Nairobi County in the 2023-2024 budget has allocated Ksh1.7billion towards the Dishi na County programme. Ksh500 million is allocated to build seven more kitchens and the rest to subsidize the cost of a plate for each child.

Parents and guardians will pay only Ksh5, daily, for each plate.

The school feeding program will cushion parents, keep children in schools, increase enrollment and transition to higher learning institutions in public primary schools and ECDs across 17 sub-counties in Nairobi.

The construction phase has seen over 200 people employed including women and people leaving with disability.
